Quartz vs Granite vs Quartzite: Choosing a Kitchen Countertop — illustrative design image

Quartz, granite and quartzite should be compared by the actual product, slab, care requirements and installed scope—not by a claim that one material is universally best. Quartz is an engineered surface; granite and quartzite are natural stone. Confirm the selected material's identity and written care instructions with your supplier and fabricator.

Start with the look you are approving

For natural stone, review the actual slab where possible and discuss how its pattern will appear across seams and edges. A small sample cannot show the full variation. For engineered quartz, confirm the design, finish, thickness and approved layout rather than assuming the showroom display exactly represents every installation.

Bring a cabinet door and flooring sample into the selection process. View samples in the room's light. Strong movement in a surface can be attractive, but it should work with the backsplash and cabinet details rather than compete with them.

Understand everyday care

For natural stone, ask whether the selected surface requires a sealer, how to assess its condition and which cleaners are appropriate. Sealing does not make stone indestructible. The Natural Stone Institute's care guidance recommends cleaning approaches suited to the stone and cautions against assuming acidic cleaners are safe.

Engineered quartz has product-specific care rules as well. For example, Cambria's product-care guidance addresses heat protection. Use the selected brand's instructions rather than applying another material's care routine. A product example is not a claim that Homes Cabinet supplies that brand.

Ask how the installation will work

Request a written layout showing proposed seams, edge profiles, sink and faucet openings, overhangs and any required support. Ask who is responsible for checking the cabinet condition and readiness before templating. Cabinet leveling, appliance specifications and final sink details can affect fabrication.

If you are keeping existing cabinets, confirm that they are suitable for the proposed surface and discuss the risk of damage during removal. Read our guide to replacing countertops while keeping cabinets. Do not schedule reconnection work until the responsible professionals agree on the sequence.

Compare the total installed proposal

Use the same dimensions and details for each quote. Compare fabrication, edges, cutouts, support, delivery, installation, removal, disposal and plumbing separately where relevant. Do not assume an advertised surface price covers the entire project. Ask what happens if measurements or site conditions change.

For a full kitchen renovation, select the countertop alongside cabinetry, backsplash, lighting and flooring. Homes Cabinet can discuss this coordinated scope during a Greater Atlanta consultation. The final recommendation should reflect how you use your kitchen and the maintenance you are comfortable providing.

Frequently asked questions

Are quartz and quartzite the same?

No. Engineered quartz and natural quartzite are different products. Confirm the exact material and follow its own fabrication and care requirements.

Does every natural stone need the same sealing schedule?

No. Follow guidance for the selected stone, finish and sealer. Ask the fabricator how to assess the surface instead of assuming one fixed interval applies to every countertop.

Can I choose a countertop before choosing cabinets?

You can explore options early, but final fabrication depends on an approved layout and site readiness. Coordinate cabinet, appliance and sink decisions before final measurements.

Planning guidance is not a site-specific quote or a product guarantee. Confirm the products, scope and installation requirements with the responsible project professionals.
